Nationalism aside - Australia is producing some of the most interesting music in the world today.
Melbourne, its de facto 'cultural capital' is host to a burgeoning live music scene from which no genre of music is excluded. Sydney, the sprawling metropolis of the eastern coast, spawns at least 5 awesome bands a year, common themes include the banality of urban life and being a mad cunt. Brisbane's unique flavor of 'toilet-punk' is original and refreshing (in a downer kinda way), something about the heat and how fuckin' boring it is in Brisbane seems to make people angry and apathetic in equal amounts. Adelaide bands all seem to share similar sentiments of isolation, boredom and other feelings you get from living in a cultural-backwater. Tasmania does okay too. I miss the capital 'cities' because I haven't heard music from those places (yet).

Anybody who wants to share their experience with Aussie music should post in here! (trying to confine this thread to relatively recent bands)

For anybody who hasn't heard any here some stuff I recommend:

Royal Headache (garage/pop punk)
Eddy Current Suppression Ring (garage)
Total Control (post-punk)
Lower Plenty (folk/country)
Peak Twins (garage pop)
Bitch Prefect (indie pop)
Kitchen's Floor (shit punk)
Meat Thump (downer vibes D: )
Constant Mongrel (punk/post-punk)
Raw Prawn(punk)

Good point! I have had 0 contact with Australian Hip-Hop. To be honest I've always been scared away from it. It's too... sincere, or something. I kinda like this track, but yeah not my cup of tea. If you have any tracks you think will convince me otherwise, please link!

Another post I made about oz hip hop, pretty much the same thing I want to post ITT.

It's cool though, hip hop isn't for everybody just like punk isn't for everybody and so on. Growing up some of my favorite bands were Bad Religion, Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag, Millencolin.

Yeaaaa kinda except I'm almost certain those bands' target audience is 15 year olds. Anyway yeah I find aussie hip-hop cringe-inducing and almost offensive in some ways. But like you said it ain't for everybody (: Do you like other (legit) hip-hop like JDILLA/MFDOOM/MADLIB/TRIBECALLEDQUEST/ET. AL ?

Ahh man I just can't get behind it! So cheesey! Listening to a Grieves song 'Lightspeed' about a teenager struggling with being a teenager. Is there some ironic value I'm missing or is it some kind of twee thing?

Actually like the beats. Sounds like RJD2/Primal Scream kinda trip-hop stuff. Just the lyrics - the vague 'screw the man money isnt important politicians are evil' thing I find sort of silly. Needs less sincerity/more irony :P

EDIT: I think some mc's can do the new-age spiritualism slash everyones-a-mindless-automaton-submitting-to-the-system-except-me. Just takes some ballin' ass flow and a sense of self-awareness. Mos Def!
