For some reason, I couldn't find the email associated with my old account, so new account =(

So, my love of farming has finally come to and end, and I know there are people who want to show Grinding Gear's Games who's truly boss.

Jokes aside, I've been looking for ways to bot Path of Exile. At this point, with the lack of static items (good uniques, etc) botting Path of Exile would require intricate programming and knowledge of each individual class, their abilities and enemy reactions to abilities.

Why bother with this when you can simply run to a chest over and over and over again while killing a mob maybe every 5-10 minutes? I would definitely prefer this.

Currently, in PoE, act one ends in a dungeon map that includes zero trash mobs, one boss, and one large treasure chest. This treasure chest is highly exploitable.

The Map: Merviel's Chamber

Image

This map illustrate's Merviel's Chamber, zero combat, two seconds of kiting, free loot.

A bot would do a few things in order to accomplish a successful "free loot run."

We will start by assuming the bot is in the middle of runs and has just completed a run, and has just exited the zone by the same place it entered. The bot would turn around, emulate a Control+Left click on the zone's portal (which brings up a screen that allows the player to enter a "new" un-touched instance of the zone).

Image

The bot would start from the southern part of the map, heading north along with cyan path. Once the both reaches Merviel, the green spot and path, the bot make a slight zig zag motion in order to coerse Merviel into moving away from her chest. Once this zig zag is complete, the bot cirlces around the large rock in the center, leaving Merviel behind and allowing the free loot to be collected. Once the loot is examined by the bot

Unlike Diablo 2, the UI was designed for VERY efficient gameplay!

Example;
Image

As you can see, there would be very limited interaction with the inventory from the bot's perspective until the bot went to stash and/or vendor items.

Prime example of this, skills drop in the form of gems in this game which are then socketed into gear.

The two loot drops show two skill gems, "Lightning Strke" and "Lesser Multiple Projectiles"

The Lightning Strike gem, is a normal skill gem lacking the "Quality" attribute.
The Lesser Multiple Projectiles, is a normal skill gem WITH the "Quality" attribute.

A bot would simply hover over the gem (and with Merviel kited out of the way, she's likely NOT going to interrupt the bot's examination process) and decipher whether or not is has quality or not.

Taking a look at the middle shot, top row, fourth item down, "Plated Maul" You'll notice this has A Red Square and a Green Square. Squares incidicate sockets, color indicates socket type or color, and if you look closely, you'll see a small line connecting the two square. This means that the item's sockets are linked. While compiling a full list of items for the bot to pick up and ignore, the bot would not have to pick up a SINGLE item it did not intend to sell to a vendor or stash.

If anyone is interested in this idea, and/or would like some help compiling lists of items to keep, I would be more than happy to help in any way I can. Unfortunately, I'm a terrible programmer, otherwise I would venture this project myself.

I can obtain beta keys for anyone interested in undertaking this assigment

I'm tinkering with making a bot for this game, not an autoit bot either.

I have basic movement working as well as creating a new instance, I'm working on figuring out how to determine all the items on the ground and after seeing what format that ends up as I may have to make an item database.

Also need to figure out monster information (to make sure I avoid Merveil's freeze,, for example)

I haven't really bothered looking at hp/mp or drinking potions, I have looked at using skills though and can actively cast phase run as soon as it runs out consistently :)

Is anyone else looking at such things?

Just a FYI, it's already been mentioned that these "free loot" runs will be eliminated, forcing players to start from the beginning of the zone area to get to the boss rather than simply being able to start a new boss room instance like you can now. See: [Feb 21] Boss Drops/Farming for one of the sources. There's more info scattered on the forums too. So it might be a fun project short term, but you have to count on it not actually staying for long once OBT+ comes.

Yeap, I am. I've gone through some packets already, got a feel for how things are setup, but my main focus right now is writing all the tools I need to make the task of logging and analyzing packets a lot easier. The nice thing about the way PoE is setup is that they have a single function for parsing data, so you can hook that and get the exact format of all packets processed. Packet writing isn't so nice in terms of building, but there is a single Send function you can hook to trace backwards from to see how packets are built.

I started some of the item's on the ground id work today. You need to have the GGPK files extracted to make progress with it. It's actually a clever system, they just hash the item id string and send that rather than keeping separate ids per item like most games do. If you've not looked at the GGPK yet, you can find some useful information in this thread if you don't want to do it from scratch: GGPK Defragmenter. I had my own GGPK API done before that thread was made, but there was one little aspect of the GGPK that was impossible to figure out (related to hashes), but luckily a dev said exactly what it was in that thread!

My other primary focus right now is figuring out how to reconstruct the current map based on the level seed. I would assume a maphack is possible for this game, so once that is worked out, I can work on finding nice pathfinding logic to get from place to place on the map. I think that's going to be my biggest focus for a while, since everything I'd want a bot to do hinges on being able to navigate the map successfully.

I'm interested in contributing to a clientless bot for this game (that can work with the client too, hopefully?.) I am rusty when it comes to reverse engineering the client, though. Has anyone been able to get it running with a debugger and/or get IDA to do its thing?

I wouldn't mind contributing path finding, dodging projectiles, moving away from monsters, netcode/packet handling, and things like that. I was/am a developer for OpenKore, contributed to jsp's pathfinding, and I think if you search my post history you can see me tinkering with one of those bots half a year ago. I also got qq to run on the latest d2 version just fine. Oh, and I developed a plugin system for another game and various plugins to assist play/exploit for it.

Unfortunately, I don't have much time. Also, if anyone has the dat file format worked out I wouldn't mind access to that for a non-hack related project (dps calculator/build solver type of project, as well as fansite with detailed information for various things.)

edit: I also have an account here and on jsp from '02 or so, and I have an active Game Deception account.

Just as a FYI, the DAT file format is dynamic. Each file has a different parsing format based on the input data. This means, you pretty much have to go through and setup the parsing code for each file individually. There's some trial and error for some files, while others are pretty straight forward.

The packets for the game are the same way. There's no way to parse out an entire packet outside the client without knowing the exact format since everything is stream processed. There is no size field to break up individual messages, so you have to pretty much have 100% correct parsing code if you hope to make a clientless bot.

I'm working on some stuff as I said before, but nothing is ready for release (except for one thing). I'm still trying to find the right place to call "home" for Path of Exile development. I'm thinking about setting up my own site, but first I'm looking around to try and find any existing communities with an established PoE user base whom are cheaters. Obviously, I can't post this stuff on official forums. ;)

Not sure which of us you are talking to methyl, but it'd be interesting to hear what you have done so far. I'm not seeing too many people working on PoE, a lot of people seem to be going to D3/GW2, which makes PoE perfect to take over. :D

This is a list of all the stuff I'm working on and planning to work on. Just for reference, since most of my work is not on this alias and I don't post on these forums much, I'm not a beginner. I've been around a long time working on stuff like this for many games:

1. GGPK Api - I already have a complete GGPK API done in C# for reading the files. On my todo list is to add the necessary writing code for updating and creating GGPKs. This is nothing in the way of me completing this, but I'd rather spend the time on other things right now.

Here's just an image of the data folder form the extracted files, nothing special.
Image

2. Maphack - Completed and working. However, with the new patch that is coming next week, I'm sure it might break, so I'll have to update it again then. It's a lot of fun, but I'm trying to work out some ideas to help keep it controlled.

Here's one of the demo videos I have of it.

3. Emulator - Slowly implementing different portions of it for testing my code and tools with. Using the emulator, I was able to do the work I needed to complete the Maphack, as trying to reverse the client when running on servers is hard due to the heartbeat disconnects if you pause for too long.

Here is a video of the Act 3 town in the current client, running on my emulator.

4. Bot / Bot Framework - No work has begun yet, because I want all the tools in place first to collect the data I need. I'll be working on learning the client and packets as I work on the emulator and will test the bot on the emulator a bit as well as the official servers. Eventually, I want to do for Path of Exile, all the things that were done for D2.

5. Packet Tools - Today, I completed testing on a set of tools for packet analysis. Using client hooks, I dump the packets sent and received by the client. The sent packets are not able to be automatically parsed, but I do save the location where they are sent from, so I know which packets come from where in the client. Received packets are completely parsed , so I know the exact layout of data. As with the sent packets, I keep track of the address they are parsed at, so I can easily follow the client logic to figure out how the data is used.

I also have coded in automatic log e-mailing to reduce the amount of work contributors have to do. The downside is, if the log file gets too big, they'll have to upload it themselves for me. As a result, it's typical to exit the client every 15-30 or so minutes. Eventually I'll need to update the compression method. I'm using GZipStream, but when testing, my final log file was 2MB and another persons was 20MB. We both had about the same amount of data, so this is a problem to look into.

For example, this is a chat packet with a linked item. I already know the item id system, so that's not an issue.

6. Other Tools - I have some plans for other tools to work alongside the MapHack for cheaters. For example, I've done some early testing on a "low life/shield exit" tool for Hardcore. When your life or shield drops below a certain %, you exit the client so you don't die. There's some gotchas with it, but so far in my limited testing, I haven't died yet. This wouldn't work on cutthroat because of the delay before log-off, though.

7. Dat Tools - Work in progress. Everything has to be done by hand to figure out the formats, so I'm not rushing to get this all done because of how many more changes are upcoming with the game. I've done enough with them to be familiar enough to handle updates, but the time spent doing them all just to keep updating them isn't worth it at this point, since I have other things to do.

As an example, here's "FlavourText.dat" parsed:

8. Data Mining Site - Pretty self explanatory. Like wow/tor-head, except I don't have the infrastructure to do such a thing, so this will be the lowest priority, as other people who already can do this stuff will probably be ahead of me. Using what I already have, I've been able to see Act 3 and the 6th (int/dex) and 7th (str/dex/int, technically not a class, but it's all coded in already) character classes that are in the game. Likewise, a few of the early skills for the 6th class. All this stuff will change, but I'll be able to have access to it.

For me, this Path of Exile stuff is my current "life work". All my time is being devoted to it as if I can't make a job out of this, I'm off to find a 9-5, something I really want to avoid. I'll have a site up sometime soon that will organize all of what I have just said. I'm not trying to rush setting up a site/forums yet because I'd like to get enough tools done to make it worthwhile. I think I'm getting closer to that point.

You done great job for now I'm very impressed. I just made a DLL which communicates with interface by ZeroMQ and forwards all sent and received packets. It can send packets as well. For now, it can be used to autopick items, we just need to decode item packet for selection.
I made project on Teambox so we can communicate and share thoughts much easier, feel free to join:

Here's a video of my current development tools project: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zfaTwPfIQg

I don't have a release thread yet, but everything is ready for testing at this point. If anyone watches the entire thing and has any feedback, feel free to shoot me a message.

So far, I'm really happy with how things are going.

I'm waiting for OBT myself. The game has changed in dynamics quite a lot since I first got access to beta. I've been updating my tools and frameworks and stuff still though. No new videos though. I've been trying out different technologies to come up with the best approach for various things, using a lot of cool C# stuff right now.

Does anyone have an opinion on botting in the current version of the game? In normal mode, the game has been made a lot more difficult than earlier on, and it feels like making a decent bot will be really tricky if you don't want to die all the time. It seems like you have to really kite around to avoid dying early on, so maybe more specialized bots are needed. I'll start doing some research into possibilities, but not sure if I'll actually make anything anymore. I did still want to make some tools/frameworks for development stuff, but I've been trying to find the best way to organize and maintain it.

Normally you start botting once your character is strong enough.

You also have to consider the final game certainly won't look like the beta, so the difficulty will be balanced.
Now you've got 4 difficulties with only 2 acts.

A better aproach might be to use "Materia Level Bots" first then switch to farmbots.
Remember that you want to skip the boring parts of the game.

I think a good start would focus on AFK orb/gem and rare/legendary collections.

Then port back to town and fill up the pages.

I have a "build" of a character suitable to this. Plus there is one particular map perfect for this
