What is the true purpose of forums and what exactly were they created for?

Every forum takes on a unique shape and has their own little quirks and rules, and to me it seems like most forums stray away from what they really are. Now obviously the rules are what also draw people to that particular forum, so don't think I'm saying it is wrong. Now I am not singling any forum out or anything, I am just saying at it's core what is a forum and what is it's actual purpose.

My idea of a forum is a place where people ask questions and other people give the best most legit responses possible, and as more people read it it should be critiqued and picked apart by people that read it.

This is what made Blizzhackers and d2 were so great, the fact that you had a community of people that scanned everything and experienced the hack, bot, or anything, you felt safe and at home before you downloaded it. It is very reliable as to where other places are not.

It creates a legit learning environment that releases information that may otherwise be hard to come by. If there is no one picking the posts apart and it they being read without complaint, then that is what a real forum post is about. Also having people build and add useful content so that other people with similar problems can just go straight to their trusty forums, search them and know they going into the project right.

Forums to me are a place to post useful legit links that are on topic. Forums are key in the evolution of the internet. It is a place to share your knowledge and a place where you can link all of the best information in one place. I also know they billion+dollar untapped resource, but lets not get into that ;P
