So my girlfriend decided to buy me a mushroom grow kit (mushbox myco101 if anyone cares) for my birthday as a surprise, and hopefully if I can follow along with what I've seen online, this will be a successful grow log. (:


[Oct 18 - Day -3]

My completely legal spore syringe arrives in the mail.

I bought B+ and Costa Rica strains







[Oct 21 - Day 1]

While waiting for the kit my gf bought, I just threw the syringes in the fridge q:
Finally it came Friday, the post office left a note about it in our mailbox

Here's everything that came in it:

Aquarium Heater, Perilite, Pre-Sterelized Jars, thermometer, and a incubation chamber and fruiting chamber.


After seeing how easy the set up is, I'm pretty sure the kit is kinda overpriced and easily duplicated. (Oh well it was a nice gift )

Here's everything else that we bought to in addition to the kit:

Vermiculite, more jars, alcohol, peroxide, masks, gloves, sterno, buckets, hygrometer, socket timer, cotton balls



So I placed the aquarium heater in one of the containers to get it to warm up to the temp required for incubation (86ish), it takes awhile so I leave it in there and move on





When I did this step I figured the alcohol would weigh the second container it down so the thermo would read the right temp eventually.




Here is where it got srs mode, sanitized the whole room, took a shower, washed the glass table down with alcohol, wore gloves, etc. Being sanitized is really important in this from what I've read so I'm being careful q:
Here's the first 6 jars, and the syringes, these will be the Costa Rica strain




I wiped down the syringe with alchy and burned that shit in the sterno flame till it was red hot, I did this step for almost every hole. (at least wiping it with alchohol)

I got a little more organized and better at when I was doing the B+ strain
I forgot to wipe the lids with alcohol in the first ones X.X so I did it first with the B+'s

Got tired of wiping the syringe down so I just threw all the balls in a little cup and poured in alch. q:




Now all the jars are ready for incubation



When I put them in I noticed the water wasn't warm at all, just room temp, not even the warmth it was when I put the heater in at first
I opened it up and the heater was off. I assumed it turned on and off but then I looked up the reviews for it online and they were shit. I tried it in other plugs, after it cooled down and nothing.



Well fuck; I put a heating pad over the jars and drove to petsmart.




Here's the one I bought, it was $30



I put the both heaters so it wouldn't get cold just for the night (while the aquarium heater warmed up)



After all that we decided to celebrate, so we got mushroom and pepperoni pizza





Hopefully this all works and this log goes from start to finish. (:

This looks promising. How much was everything together? I wanted to do this for a while.

The kit was like $99 but with shipping (from canada) it came to $150, but I think you could make it yourself (and better) for maybe 50-60$

The other stuff was like 30-40$ but some of it is household stuff so it depends (peroxide, lights, whatever)

The syringes are $17-$18 each but if you get 3 they give a free one, so I got 4 for ~$50 with shipping
And after you grow them you can make spore prints and refill your old syringes






Nah lol, I just turned it on to show the socket worked and that the heater didn't. I think I'm going to post this log on the kit's (mushbox) forums too and maybe they'll refund me haha

If you've got any spore solution left in those syringes, use it to make some liquid cultures. You'll have a LOT more solution to work with and jars will colonize faster than with spores.

[Oct 24 - Day 4]


Right now is the boring part, I have to leave the jars in for ~15ish days plus

I think I'm only going to update every couple of days now because this part is kinda slow

I don't even get mushrooms usually, but this local place make everything amazing, fucking gyros and stromboli too haha



I've actually looked into to that a lot, all I need is like agar/honey and water right? I have two syringes still, it looks really legit.

[Oct 26 - Day 6]

Yay it's my b-day! Now the log is all caught up.
Did you know in VA you can buy alcohol the day before your birthday?


The B+'s are doing really well, lots of growth already Alot of the costa rica's aren't doing as well though, they have little to no growth. I hope it's not because I forgot to clean the lids with alcohol. At least some have tiny growth, hopefully with time they'll come along.

I checked the temp and its still reading a little low (80-83), so I decided to weigh the container down a bit. This way it's not just floating on the water so the entire bottom of the container gets warmth.

Damn yo, seems expensive as tits to grow your own. A buddy guy of a friend was selling shrooms around here for $5 a gram, but I missed out.

Do you know how many grams per jar you should expect to get?

Well once its started it just keeps growing, and you can refill your syringes from sporeprints that you make from the shrooms you grow. Eventually it should all pay for itself (: And if not, it's a fun little hobby lol



dunno really, they come in flushes (after it grows once it grows again like 4 more times but less and less every time)
I think its like 6-10 grams each dried per jar





*mini-update*

I took off all the tape that was covering the holes, I read it needs airflow and that its probably why most of the costa rica's aren't developing. No pics but you'll probably see it in the next update q:

Also I'm going out tomorrow to buy more substrate stuff for more jars, and stuff for a liquid culture like kardooshi suggested since I just got a pressure cooker finally.

get karo over honey. I've heard it's better and does not caramelize as easily. Or malt extract/dextrose is the ideal choice. And no need for agar in liquid cultures (but it is useful for strain isolation, etc.).
