Post subject: A phone scam story

So I came home yesterday to the woman in tears freaking out about her brother being stuck in a mexican jail. Now I know what you are thinking, because its exactly what I would have thought, but there's a twist. Her brother is a marine and travels frequently for training. He was on his way to texas this Sunday to start doing training there. Plus her brother is a fuckin lunatic so him being stuck in a mexican jail is pretty plausible. Theres more to this (much older aunt and uncle were the ones originally contacted, etc etc) but its not that important.
Long story short, woman had 2500 bucks ready to western union just as I came home and found out the area code of the US embassy calls were actually 514 numbers (herp derp french answering service) and I explained to her this was def a scam. Now I am wondering if its possible that someone in the military might have sold/leaked his private information? They had lots of phone numbers of family, lots of personal details that would require a lot more than just social engineering via a few phone calls. Kind of shady if you ask me.

this happened to my gf and it was weird as fuck because they knew shit about her family who lives in el salvador and were claiming to kill them if they didnt send money. i told her it was total bullshit and to hang up. they called back a few times and I kept telling them to fuck off (in spanish) and they stopped calling.
