Hey guys, this is about me a current sophmore about to finish 2nd year university

all throughout hhigh school and so far college I have been undecided on my major. I really don't know which major to get, nor do I have a relative idea of what I like.

Diablo II really got me into computers. Using them, playing them, etc. Eventually I started to upgrade my computer which I self taunt and then I continued learning more on more. Fast forward a bit to senior year high school. I applied for Geek Squad, got accepted, and worked there for 3 years. I'm A++ certified (means nothing, I know) and just click with computers. I have ADHD so I'm the type to have 10 tabs open. (I know geek squad , computer hardware, or that type of shit =/= programming)

Anyways, that was random. Deciding on my major, I REALLY don't know what to do right...So for spring 2012 semester I took MIS-intro , macro economics, and accounting. Needless to say, MIS bored me (excel, word, microsoft access etc) , accounting I cannot stand! I see the importance in it, see the chance of getting a job after college is pretty much guaranteed, yada yada yada. But like fuck, I have an accounting final tommarrow and I'd rather start doing self-taunt C++ now which won't do me anything than study for this shit! (And that's with me on my prescribed adderall ... )

Anyways, before I get to my question, I want to point this out. About a year ago I tried to do some self taunt C++. Now that I think back on it, it kind of did excite me! I used these videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyVhn0FWWB4 serious...I look and I went all the way up to 15 ! I know that is still baby but right now im kinda surprised that I went so far.

I don't know why I stopped but , The point of this thread is that I need to pick a major and business doesn't seem to cut it. I kinda am interested in computer programming and I can see myself doing it. I'm the type of person that if I want to do something , and say hit a road block, I keep trying and trying...Type of guy that will hit page 15 on google after many refined key-word searches...

My one thing that I tell myself in my head is this : Why should I take computer science now, when you have all these people in 3rd world countries which these outsources corporations will probably outsource to anyways ???
Is this wrong, do I have it wrong, can you please correct me on this?
(I was going to ask about the job market, but i'll just google it. Oh and about that, I google everything)

Should I do it, am I wasting my time/money? is computer science major worth it ? please help.

If you think you'll be happy, do it. You could probably get away with not going to school for it though.

Also: taught, taught, taught.

Yes you are wrong I can say that straight forward, very wrong. The jobs that corporations outsource are the ones that are painstakingly inconvenient to the company and that can be taught in a few weeks. The things you learn in your CSCI classes are not those. Just like accounting, you are guaranteed a job unless you don't take it seriously. Companies fish and bait computer science majors even when they are still in their junior courses. If you do major in CS don't even worry about the job market overseas. Assuming you're from the US, you will not lose a position due to an outsource to a developing country. US still maintains the highest export in services within the technological field.

tl;dr f*ck bitches and get money with ur cs degree.

Don't worry about outsourcing, if you become a decent programmer you will have no trouble finding a job. Check dice.com if you don't believe me. I passed up attending a top 10 law school to return to UG for a CS degree. So far not regretting my decision.

This. If you have a linkedIn account, put computer science on there, with a few years of experience you will have to beat recruiters off with a stick.

Programming isn't easy, not everyone can do it. In fact, most people cannot do it... I've seen so many people burn out. Teach yourself an introductory language, and see if you like it. Don't change majors until you try it, and like it.

Will be the best decision you ever made in this economy. Won't be easy, though. Someone mentioned a career could happen without a formal degree. While that's true, given your situation, capitalizing on a CS degree would be ideal. That way you have less Swiss cheese holes in your theoretical knowledge once you're ready for the workforce - graduation.

Study because you have a passion in gaining a larger array of knowledge in that field. Forget what people tell you about what you should study because of its economic factors (which are probably wrong anyway).

We need as much people in the arts as we do in science and technology.

If the department at your univ is decent, go for it.

Getting a job is ridiculously easy. I just transferred to UC San Diego and am ending my first year here as C.S. and I was able to get an internship at the first place I interviewed which is paying really well. Prior to this this year I had no experience programming. I kid you not, at the job fairs almost every company is looking for C.S. or C.E. majors.

However, this hinges on your school having good places recruiting from it. If you're going to some random state school then my experience thus far may not translate to what you will see.

Keep in mind though that learning to program is not necessarily something they're going to teach you. Computer Science is about optimization, they sort of just expect you to program on your own.

This. My school has a top-10 CS department in a city renown for its tech industry, job placement after graduation seems to be a non-issue.

I support the arts. I don't care if they can't self-sustain and need government funding to survive.

You should do what you're passionate about, NOT what you think will land you a good job.

Please god tell me you're kidding. This is a large reason the US is in the position it is in now. The world doesn't need musicians (we need some but not as many as go to school for it) etc... We need engineers, scientists and doctors. Actually contribute to society instead of being a burden to it.

If you want to be a musician, that's fine but don't spend $100000 on an education for it. And be ready to work a minimum wage job for the rest of your life. Don't expect handouts from me and society, as that is unsustainable.

I never said it made economic sense - but I do believe the arts is an indirect economic driver.
