My journey started with C when I was around 12-13. for various reasons I never stayed with it. until around 16 I started getting into it a bit deeper. at 23 I'm about to enter the workforce as a systems analyst programmer.
things I found helpful.
after getting down variables, arithmetic, if//loop logic, functions, and some of the other basic building blocks. I found structures, manipulating them with pointers, building dynamic lists with them , getting into why moving pointers around is more efficient then moving the actual data around. really gives you a good understanding of the language. and this is really the first point where you don't need to be hand led any more. if you can do anything mentioned with pen and paper. you have the knowledge to learn anything else. that was the point where I really started to stray from books//school and went into my own types of things.
after learning : java, C//C++ , ruby , python, visual basic , c# , so on so on. C//C++ is still by far my favourite. and although I think learning something like ruby//python using Zed Shaws book: learn code the hard way. would be an easier introduction into programming. and maybe using udacity as well for the python course. if you can master C++. you can learn anything.
