Again, I'm quite familiar with how it's topical application remineralizes teeth. If you have a source stating how physical consumption increases fluoride levels in saliva, then present it. Otherwise, the benefits are only achieved for the period of time in which the water passes through your mouth.

are you ignoring the benefits of systemic fluoride intake for children whose permanent teeth are still developing? like i said, systemic intake isn't primarily for adults but it DOES in fact increase salivary concentration of fluoride.

Using ingestion as a means to achieve topical benefits is just bad science.

eesh that thing is an eyesore. I found a source for you.

http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/full/139/11/1457

This is of course using fluoride supplements of high dosage, not ~4ppm or whatever as is added to water supplies. Also, it's nearly impossible to pinpoint the efficacy as many of the supplements are still topically applied through chewing, rinsing, etc, and then swallowed.

Even so, why do we medicate everyone's water when the ingestion is only beneficial for kid's developing primary teeth? It still seems like an unnecessary risk to combat a problem that is easily remedied with even half-assed oral hygiene.

as someone who tends to hold more conservative values i can't say i disagree with your questioning. as a future dental professional i have to advocate for that which benefits the overall oral health of the community.

even mild cases of dental fluorosis resulting from overdose of fluoride are very rare now, much less the more serious complications from excess fluoride ingestion. and if your last statement was that easy...well, dentists wouldn't exist in the capacity that they do today (even though it really is as simple as maintaining proper oral hygiene).

typically levels achieved are ~1 ppm.

I'm not so much concerned about dental/skeletal fluorosis as I am about endocrine dysfunction, which is a relatively new and difficult field to study.

Im not going to read through all 8 pages but the best type of filtration system is reverse osmosis if you are wanting to get something that works very well, Its funny because in pharmacology my teacher was joking how we get a daily dose of prozac in our water. Studies have also shown that you only benefit from topical use of fluoride, also that they put lithium in the water because it is a catalyst that speeds up the process of the neurological effect from the fluoride.

We just went over this in biochemistry lecture. Fluoride acts as an antibiotic against the bacteria in the plaque in our mouths. Before fluoride was introduced into water supplies, dental cavities were pandemic. Since fluoride was added, the number of cavities has dropped to virtually none when compared to previous times. The introduction of fluoride to the water supply is considered a public health victory. After fluoride was introduced, hundreds of dental schools across the country were stopped because the demand for dentists was so drastically reduced. Recent studies show that the level of fluoride is slightly higher than necessary, and many places are lowering the fluoride content of the water slightly, but even still, the public health benefits far outweigh any negative effects of its presence in the water supply.

Fluoride toxicity happens at much higher levels than you will consume in the water supply alone. If you swallow your toothpaste, then you may have issues (white spots on teeth, brittle bones, etc.), but otherwise it's at such a dilute level that it's virtually harmless.

Fluoride in my tap water is directly related to my sparkling white teeth. Tap water 4 life.

Wrong. It does more harm to your teeth by far. The belief that consuming fluoride promotes healthy teeth is an out-dated fact.
Fluoride is a poison.

Yeah so doesn't it kill the bacteria in my mouth that want to eat my teeth?
